[KOL Interview] Prof. Laurent Peyrin-Biroulet: 1. What is IBD?
1. What is IBD?
Hello, I'm Laurent Peyrin-Biroulet. I'm [a] gastroenterologist at Nancy University Hospital in France. And I'm [a] Professor of Gastroenterology. I was, until a few days ago, the ECCO president. I'm still the GETAID president. And until also a few days ago, I was the scientific secretary of the International Organization of IBD, which is the IOIBD.
The common symptoms of IBD are diarrhea, abdominal pain and rectal bleeding. Importantly these patients also may have some fatigue which is something very important, some weight loss, some fever, so many symptoms linked to the digestive symptoms, but also some extraintestinal manifestations. So half of IBD patients will have arthritis, will have uveitis, will have some skin lesions, because IBD is a systemic disease.
I think the main challenges they are facing in their daily lives is everything related to disability. So before the disease they could do everything but the impact on the social and professional life is huge.
